The old woman across the street lived alone with no visiting relatives. Grocery stores placed their goods inside her enclosed porch and picked up their cash payments from the rusty old mailbox labeled, ‘Helldag Schmidt’.
The other residents kept to themselves in the quiet retirement community. They made no attempts to welcome Suma to their neighborhood for the two months she had lived among them.
Her arrival had upset the balance of their easy-paced life with her frequent departures for and arrivals from work at all hours of the day and night. The middle-aged factory maintenance worker didn’t mind. She worked long odd hours and spent most of her home-time indoors to rest for her next shift.
Whenever outside sounds alerted her, she peeked through slits in her blinds, curious to find out about her new neighbors without detection.
