After getting off the bus and striding along a country lane for miles, Gabrielle entered a large house. She’d responded to an ad to rent the furnished home, isolated by forests with no neighbors. The location had the perfect atmosphere to finish writing her novel. She told no one of her self-imposed isolation.
The home came with an offer too good to believe. Instead of paying rent, she had to knock on the door to the loft just before sunrise and right after sunset each day. The sound of a bell in the room meant the completion of her task and freedom to pursue her own pleasures. She had access to the main and upper floors, with a stocked larder in the kitchen.
After a quick glance around the main floor, she climbed the stairs to the second floor in search of a room to unpack her backpack and a small suitcase. She tested the bed, then searched the hallway for stairs to the loft…
