At the end of his shift at midnight, watchman Isaac said goodbye to his colleague, who had arrived to take the next shift. Cloudy skies allowed the moon to shine for only brief periods, giving Isaac the opportunity to stare ahead on the deserted Public Road. Using steady wide strides, he propelled himself through the mostly darkened night.
