The Hat Stand

Calvin lived in a bungalow with his quadriplegic mother, who had survived a car accident that killed his father. His mother’s need for twenty-four-hour care forced him to quit his job as a grave-digger. He had closed out his career with his own father’s grave.

The five-foot-two Calvin weighed close to three hundred pounds. His scruffy hair blended into his unshaven face with a braided ponytail hanging off his chin. He wore old tee shirts with motorcycle clubs’ insignias. He reveled in his false persona as a biker gang member, even though he’d never held a riding permit. At age thirty-nine, he lived in his parents’ home as a freeloading bachelor.
